CHESTER COUNTY COUNCIL,

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA

Overview

The Chester County Council was founded in 1919. The purpose of the council is to facilitate and support the delivery of Boy Scouts of America programs to youth, while having a positive impact on the communities in Chester County. We are proud of our long tradition of developing responsible and productive citizens, and remain committed to cultivating what is best in the human spirit in our youth.

Although a national organization provides oversight, all Boy Scout councils are nonprofit entities, responsible for implementing their own programs and for 100% of their own funding. The council is governed by a volunteer board of directors and is supported by a corps of volunteers and dedicated staff.

The Chester County Council serves youth throughout Chester County, Pennsylvania and a portion of Cecil County, Maryland. Last year, more than 15,000 youth were enrolled in the council’s traditional and special programs. They were guided by more than 3,400 trained adult volunteers who donated countless hours of their time implementing Scouting programs. Additionally, Scouts and their adult leaders provided more than
200,000 hours of community service.

Nationwide, Scouting’s core programs, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, reach about 17% of available youth. In Chester County our penetration is twice the national average. In addition, each year, 175 to 200 Chester County Council Boy Scouts earn the prestigious rank of Eagle.

The council and its two camps – Camp Horseshoe and Camp Ware – have been nationally recognized for leadership training and program excellence. Thousands of adult and youth campers utilize our 965-acre Horseshoe Scout Reservation on an annual basis. This includes over 300 special needs campers and 150 Science Camp attendees.

Scouting helps youth grow more self-reliant and teaches them the value of service to others. Our community, and indeed our nation, grows stronger through the responsible, productive, and skilled citizens that Scouting develops. This is why Scouting continues to be relevant and even more essential today then when it was founded.
